Gas Forge Build 4: Insulation
After the cooking and a wire brush a few coats of high heat paint is applied.
The ceramic blanket is rated for 2700°F (1482°C), this roll is leftovers I picked up at a refractories wholesaler.
It's a good idea to wear gloves, long sleeves and a respirator when working with the blanket. Treat it the same way you would fiberglass bats. It cuts well with sharp utility knife.
The first band of 1" blanket, then a circular piece for the rear.
This is after the second layer. Another end piece cut.
Another two bands to fill the curvature of the front .
Inside the the burner collar I cut an X with the utility knife.
This is a short section of a coffee table leg. The shape and diameter is ideal for shaping the hole inside the forge and I will use it as a plug.
Here I have pushed the plug up from inside, into the burner collar.
When the plug is removed, you can see the shape that the plug makes.
Although this is not the ideal refractory, it will protect the ceramic blanket.
If it's thick, add a little bit of water.
With a thin stick, I am daubing the cement on.

The back side. Note the shelf. This is to keep a firebrick in place when using the forge in the vertical "foundry" type position.
For a harder surface I added two cheap firebricks. These are not cemented in and can (will) be replaced periodically.
